Introduction

Figure 1 NASA wings - Media Archives

Welcome to the Fly-Zero-G on line tutorial!! The lessons outlined here are to teach you the basics of space flight and orbital mechanics. With the help of Dr. Martin Schweiger Orbiter Space Flight Simulator you will be able to experience and learn how to fly a space craft into orbit, dock, transfer orbits, reentry and much much  more. Orbiter can be down load for free, just follow the link: Orbiter Space Flight Simulator. All of the lessons are free! Please donate so we can keep this website up and running.

The first step is to download orbiter from www.orbitersim.com. Follow the direction on the webpage, there are also many add-ons that enhance the flight simulator. You should also down load and read the Orbiter Space Flight Simulator users guide.

The lessons are generally broken down in several section:

  1. Lesson Objectives

  2. Concept

  3. Instrumentation Set Up

  4. Procedures

  5. Completion of Maneuver

Lesson Objective - Each lesson will have stated objectives of what you will learn. These are generally broken down in to fundamental concepts and with each new lesson building on the previous concepts taught.

Concept - A generic over view of the principles governing a particular lesson are give, this may include back ground information as well as  motivation to the importance of the lesson objectives.

Instrument Set Up - Nearly every maneuver will require some input from the "astronaut pilot" to properly configure the avionics of the space craft. As much of the instrument set up should be accomplished prior to conducting any flight maneuver.

Procedures - A step by step out line is give for each phase of flight, along with the appropriate check list. Both a textual description and pictorial representations are given so that the student can see how to position the space craft.

Completion of Maneuver - Once each maneuver or procedures is completed there is general some "clean up" that needs to be performed to reconfigure the space craft.
